The Sri Lanka tourist ETA is one of the cheapest and easiest visas in Asia for Indian citizens — it is literally free, applied for entirely online, and processed within a day for most applicants. The only cost is your time filling in the form, which takes about 10 minutes. Third-party agent sites charge anywhere from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 for the same free application, so apply only through the official government portal.

Important: Sri Lanka waived all ETA fees for Indian nationals on May 25, 2026, as part of a 40-country tourism promotion initiative ahead of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. The ETA is still mandatory — free does not mean you can skip it. Airlines check for ETA approval at boarding and will refuse to let you fly without one.

Sri Lanka Tourist Visa Checklist

Before you start your Sri Lanka visa application, make sure you have these essentials ready:

·        Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned arrival date, with at least 2 blank pages

·        Confirmed return or onward flight ticket showing passenger name matching your passport

·        Proof of accommodation — hotel booking confirmation with dates and guest names, or invitation letter from a host in Sri Lanka

·        Valid email address — your ETA approval is delivered via email only, so use an address you can access during travel

·        Digital passport-size photograph, 35mm x 45mm, JPEG or PNG format, under 2 MB, white background, taken within the last 6 months

·        Travel insurance policy — not mandatory but strongly recommended, covering medical emergencies and evacuation

·        Sufficient funds proof — bank statements for the last 3-6 months showing consistent balance; immigration may ask at the airport

·        Employment proof — salary slips for the last 3 months, employer NOC letter, or ITR for self-employed applicants

·        Cover letter stating your purpose of visit, travel dates, day-by-day itinerary and ties to India

·        Sri Lanka accommodation address — hotel name or host address for the ETA application form

The key thing to remember about Sri Lanka is the 6-month passport validity rule — your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival, not 3 months like many other countries. This is the single most common reason Indian travellers are refused entry at Bandaranaike International Airport. Check your passport expiry date well in advance and renew early if needed.

Important: The ETA application requires no document uploads — just text fields for your passport details, email, arrival date and accommodation address. The whole form takes about 10 minutes to complete. Do not pay anyone to do this for you.

Why Sri Lanka for Indian Tourists?

The closest tropical island paradise you can reach from India — and the cheapest international beach holiday available. Sri Lanka is just a 1.5-4 hour flight from seven Indian cities, the ETA is free, and a full day of beach, temples and hill-country train rides costs less than a single meal in the Maldives.

Sigiriya is one of the most spectacular ancient sites in Asia and the single most iconic sight in Sri Lanka. A 5th-century rock fortress rising 200 metres above the jungle, with frescoes, mirror walls and lion-paw gateways — climbing Sigiriya at sunrise is the kind of experience that defines a trip. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the best-preserved archaeological complexes in South Asia.

The hill-country train ride from Kandy to Ella is one of the most scenic railway journeys in the world. Tea plantations, misty mountains, waterfalls, tunnels and colonial-era stations — the slow train through Sri Lanka's hill country is the kind of journey where the travel is the destination. The blue火车 through green tea estates is the most photographed train ride in Asia.

Ella is the backpacker capital of Sri Lanka and the most charming hill-country town. The Nine Arches Bridge, Little Adam's Peak, Ravana Falls and a laid-back vibe that makes you want to stay longer than planned — Ella is small enough to walk everywhere and beautiful enough to photograph from every angle.

Sri Lanka shares deep cultural and religious ties with India — Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Christian communities coexist peacefully, vegetarian food is widely available, and Indian rupees are accepted at some border-area shops. The SAARC nationality status means Indians get discounted entry fees at many tourist sites, a perk that saves real money across a multi-day trip.

Who Can Apply?

Indian citizens travelling to Sri Lanka for tourism, sightseeing, family visits, Ayurvedic wellness or short medical trips can apply for a tourist ETA. The core requirement is the same as every visa — a genuine reason to return to India, supported by funds for the trip and a clean passport.

The tourist ETA is the most relevant option for Indian leisure travellers. It is free, processed online, and gives you 30 days with double entry — enough for most holiday itineraries. No agency, no embassy visit, no biometrics.

The business ETA is for Indian professionals attending meetings, conferences or trade events. It costs USD 30 (SAARC rate) and requires an invitation letter from a Sri Lankan company. It does not allow paid employment.

Documents Most Tourists Already Have

Getting your Sri Lanka tourist visa does not require obscure paperwork. Most of what you need is standard for any international trip:

·        Passport — valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date, with at least 2 blank pages. The 6-month rule is stricter than most countries and is checked at both application and immigration.

·        Flight ticket — A confirmed return or onward booking with passenger name matching your passport. A hold or dummy reservation works for the ETA application, but the name must match exactly.

·        Hotel bookings — Confirmed reservations for every night of your stay, or an invitation letter from the family or friends you are visiting. Refundable bookings from Booking.com or Agoda are ideal.

·        Email address — A permanent personal email (Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo) that you can access during travel. The ETA approval is delivered by email only — do not use a temporary or work email you cannot access on the road.

·        Bank statements — Last 3-6 months showing consistent balance. Not mandatory for the ETA application but immigration may ask at the airport. A stable balance of Rs 1-2 lakh for a 10-day trip is sufficient.

·        Travel insurance — Not legally mandatory but strongly recommended. Medical costs for foreigners in Sri Lanka can be high, and a basic policy covering Rs 5-10 lakh costs around Rs 300-600 for a 10-day trip.

·        Employment proof — Salary slips for the last 3 months, ITR for the last 2 years, and an employer NOC on company letterhead with your approved leave dates.

Additional Sri Lanka Tourist Visa Documents

Cover letter — A brief, honest letter explaining why you are visiting Sri Lanka, your day-by-day itinerary (which cities, how many nights each, what you plan to see), how the trip is funded, and why you will return to India. Name specific places like Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Ella's Nine Arches Bridge or Galle Fort — generic "touring South Asia" letters are the first thing officers flag. All of it can be written in English; no Sinhala or Tamil translation is needed.

If you are visiting family — Include an invitation letter from your host with their Sri Lankan residence details, address and contact number, plus proof of your relationship. The letter does not need to be notarised for tourist purposes, but having it signed and dated adds credibility. Sri Lankan immigration may ask for the host's national ID card copy.

How to Apply for a Sri Lanka Tourist Visa

The Sri Lanka tourist ETA application is entirely online — no embassy visit, no agency, no biometrics. Here is the compressed step-by-step:

1.      Visit eta.gov.lk and select Tourist ETA from the left menu, then choose Individual Application (for one person) or Group Application (for family).

2.      Fill in the application form with your passport details — full name exactly as in passport, passport number exactly as printed, date of birth in DD/MM/YYYY format, passport expiry date, nationality, email address, intended arrival date and accommodation address in Sri Lanka.

3.      Upload your digital photograph — 35mm x 45mm, JPEG or PNG format, under 2 MB, white background. No other document uploads are required.

4.      Review all entries carefully — even minor errors in passport number or name spelling can cause delays at immigration. Double-check every field before submitting.

5.      Submit the application. As an Indian citizen, the payment screen should show zero fee. If you are being asked to pay, you are on a wrong website — close the tab and go directly to eta.gov.lk.

6.      Wait for the approval email — usually within 24-48 hours, often much sooner. Check your spam folder if you do not see it within 24 hours. You can also check status at eta.gov.lk using your passport number.

7.      Print the ETA approval in colour and carry it with your passport to Sri Lanka. At Bandaranaike International Airport, present both at the immigration counter and receive your 30-day visitor permit stamp.

Expert tip: The entire process is free and takes about 10 minutes to fill in. Do not pay an agent — search results are full of sites charging Rs 1,000-5,000 to fill the same free government form. The official portal URL must end in .gov.lk. Apply no later than 2 weeks before travel to allow buffer for technical delays, though most approvals come within hours.

When to Apply for Sri Lanka Tourist Visa

The sweet spot for Indian tourists is during the dry seasons — the southwest monsoon affects the west and south coasts from May to September, while the northeast monsoon affects the east coast from October to January. The best overall window is December to April for west and south coast beaches, and May to September for east coast beaches and hill country.

Common Sri Lanka Tourist Visa Mistakes

Using third-party agent websites that charge for a free application. Search for "Sri Lanka visa India" and you will find dozens of sites offering to "process" your ETA for Rs 1,000-5,000. They fill in the same government form you can complete yourself in 10 minutes. They are not scams — they deliver a real ETA — but you are paying for something that is free. Always apply directly at eta.gov.lk.

Applying on fake websites that look like the official portal. The official Sri Lanka ETA portal is eta.gov.lk — the URL must end in .gov.lk. Fake sites use similar-looking domains like eta-srilanka.info or srilankavisa.com, charge USD 50-100, and may steal your passport information. Bookmark the official site and type the URL directly.

Ignoring the 6-month passport validity rule. Sri Lanka requires 6 months of passport validity from your arrival date, not the 3 months that many other countries accept. If your passport expires within 6 months of your planned arrival, you will be denied boarding or entry. This is the single most common reason Indian travellers are refused at the airport.

Assuming free means no application needed. The ETA is free, but it is still mandatory. You must apply and receive approval before you travel. Airlines check for ETA approval at boarding and will refuse to let you fly without one. "I thought it was visa-free" is not a defence at the airport.

Using a temporary or work email address for the application. The ETA approval is delivered by email only. If you use a temporary email address or a work email you cannot access during travel, you will not receive your approval. Use a permanent personal email like Gmail or Outlook that you can access from your phone.

Overstaying without applying for an extension. If you want to stay beyond 30 days, you must apply for an extension at the Department of Immigration in Colombo before your visa expires. Overstaying results in penalties — within 7 days of expiry is just the visa fee, but 7-14 days incurs a USD 250 penalty, and beyond 14 days it is USD 500 plus a potential entry ban.

What Indian Tourists Love About Sri Lanka

The hill-country train ride from Kandy to Ella is the single most popular experience and the reason most Indians book the trip. Tea plantations stretching to the horizon, misty valleys, waterfalls tumbling through tunnels and colonial-era stations — the slow train through Sri Lanka's hill country is the kind of journey where the travel is the destination. The blue train through green tea estates is the most photographed railway journey in Asia.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress stops people in their tracks. A 200-metre rock column rising from flat jungle, with 5th-century frescoes, a mirror wall and the remains of a lion-paw gateway — climbing the 1,200 steps at sunrise for panoramic views of the Sri Lankan lowlands is one of the great archaeological experiences in South Asia. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and Sri Lanka's most visited attraction.

The beaches are uncrowded, affordable and stunning. Mirissa for whale watching and sunrise, Unawatuna for swimming and beach bars, Arugam Bay for surfing, and Trincomalee for snorkelling at Pigeon Island — Sri Lanka's coastline offers something for every type of beach lover at prices that make the Maldives look absurd.

The food is simple, flavourful and surprisingly familiar. Rice and curry is the national dish — coconut-based curries, dhal, hoppers (bowl-shaped pancakes), string hoppers, kottu roti and fresh seafood. Vegetarian options are easier here than almost anywhere in Southeast Asia, and Indian restaurants exist in every tourist area. A full rice-and-curry meal at a local shop costs Rs 200-400.

The temples are sacred and spectacular. The Temple of the Tooth in Kandy holds what Buddhists believe is a tooth of the Buddha, the Dambulla Cave Temple contains 150 Buddha statues in five caves, and Adam's Peak draws pilgrims of all faiths to watch the triangular shadow at dawn. Sri Lanka's religious sites are as diverse as the island itself.

Travel Tips for Indian Tourists

Currency: Sri Lanka uses the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR), at about Rs 0.28 per rupee (1 INR is roughly 3.5 LKR). Cards are accepted in hotels, restaurants and larger shops, but carry cash for street food, tuk-tuks and smaller towns. ATMs are widely available in cities. Exchange money at banks or authorised exchange offices — the airport rate is acceptable but town rates are slightly better. Indian rupees are sometimes accepted at shops near the Indian border area, but LKR is preferred everywhere else.

Connectivity: Buy a local SIM card at the airport or any Dialog, Mobitel or Airtel shop — tourist packages with data cost around Rs 300-500 for 30 days with generous data. eSIMs are also available. Free WiFi is available in most hotels, cafés and restaurants. Download offline maps before travelling — Google Maps works well in cities but coverage thins in rural areas and on hill-country roads.

Transport: Sri Lanka's train network connects Colombo, Kandy, Ella, Nuwara Eliya and other hill-country towns — book second-class reserved seats for the best experience. Within cities, the PickMe app (like Uber) is the easiest and cheapest way to get around — far safer and more transparent than negotiating with tuk-tuks. Buses are cheap but crowded. Domestic flights connect Colombo to Jaffna and Batticaloa.

Food: Rice and curry, hoppers, string hoppers, kottu roti, egg roti, fish ambul thiyal (sour fish curry) and wood-apple juice are must-tries. Vegetarian food is easier to find here than in most of Southeast Asia — look for "veg" options on menus. Indian restaurants exist in Colombo, Kandy, Galle and Ella. A full meal at a local shop costs Rs 200-400, at a tourist restaurant Rs 500-1,000.

Weather: Sri Lanka's climate varies by region and season — the southwest (Colombo, Galle, Mirissa) is best from December to April, while the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) is best from May to September. The hill country (Kandy, Ella, Nuwara Eliya) is cool year-round and can be misty. Pack light, breathable clothing and a rain jacket — showers are frequent and sudden.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Sri Lanka tourist visa cost for Indians?

The tourist ETA is completely free for Indian citizens since May 25, 2026 — no government fee, no processing charge, no payment required. The business ETA costs USD 30 (approximately Rs 2,520) for Indian nationals at the SAARC country rate. Transit visas are free for all nationalities. If you use a third-party platform for application assistance, service fees of Rs 500-5,000 may apply, but these are entirely optional.

How long does a Sri Lanka tourist visa take to process?

The tourist ETA is usually approved within 24-48 hours and is often instant. However, the ETA system has experienced technical issues causing delays of 4-5 days in some cases. Apply at least 7-10 days before your intended travel date to allow buffer time. You can check your application status on the official portal using your passport number.

Is the visa fee refundable if my application is refused?

The tourist ETA is free for Indians, so there is no fee to refund. However, if you applied through a third-party agent that charged a service fee, that fee is non-refundable regardless of the outcome. For the business ETA, the USD 30 fee is non-refundable in all cases. Thorough preparation before you apply is the only way to protect any money spent.

Do I need travel insurance for a Sri Lanka tourist visa?

Travel insurance is not legally mandatory for a Sri Lanka tourist visa, but it is strongly recommended. Medical costs for foreigners in Sri Lanka can be high, and evacuation from remote areas like hill-country towns or the east coast is expensive. A basic policy covering Rs 5-10 lakh for medical expenses and evacuation costs around Rs 300-600 for a 10-day trip.

Can I visit neighbouring countries with a Sri Lanka tourist visa?

A Sri Lanka ETA does not grant access to any other country. India, the Maldives and the Maldives each have their own entry requirements. If you plan to combine Sri Lanka with the Maldives (a popular combo from Indian cities), you will need a separate Maldives visa — though Indians get visa-free entry to the Maldives for 30 days. Plan your itineraries and visas accordingly.

What is the minimum bank balance for a Sri Lanka tourist visa?

Sri Lanka does not publish an official minimum bank balance requirement for tourist ETAs. However, immigration officers may ask for proof of sufficient funds at the airport — the recommended amount is at least USD 50-75 per day of stay. For a 10-day trip, a stable balance of Rs 1-2 lakh maintained over 3-6 months with consistent salary credits is sufficient.

Can I extend my Sri Lanka tourist visa beyond 30 days?

Yes. The initial 30-day tourist ETA can be extended up to a maximum of 270 days through three consecutive extensions. The structure is: 30 days on entry, then 60 days (first extension, USD 60), 90 days (second extension, USD 150), and 90 days (third extension, USD 200). Apply for extensions at least 7-10 days before your current visa expires through the Department of Immigration in Colombo or online at eservices.immigration.gov.lk.

Is Sri Lanka safe for Indian tourists?

Yes. Sri Lanka is generally safe, with low violent crime and a welcoming attitude towards Indian visitors. The emergency police number is 119, ambulance 110 or 1990, fire 111, and there is a 24/7 tourist police hotline at 1912. The main practical concerns are petty theft in crowded areas, unlicensed tuk-tuk drivers overcharging (use the PickMe app instead), and occasional road accidents on hill-country roads. India is Sri Lanka's largest source of tourists, and Indian restaurants, vegetarian food and Hindi-speaking locals exist in every tourist area.
