Panama Tourist Visa Guide for Indians 2026

Before you travel to Panama, make sure you have these essentials ready:

·        Passport valid for at least 3 months from your date of entry with 2 blank pages

·        Valid US, UK, Schengen, Canadian, Australian, Japanese, South Korean or Singaporean visa (must be active with remaining validity)

·        Confirmed onward or return flight ticket (airlines check at boarding)

·        Proof of economic solvency — bank statement showing minimum USD 500 (approximately ₹47,500)

·        Hotel reservation or invitation letter from your host in Panama

·        Travel insurance covering medical emergencies for your entire stay

·        Yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from a country with yellow fever risk

The key thing to understand about Panama is that Indian citizens have two completely different scenarios. Important: The visa-free exemption costs nothing — Panama charges no entry fee under this route. The stamped tourist visa, when available, costs US$60 (US$50 visa fee plus US$10 consular charges, approximately ₹5,700). Third-party agent websites charge ₹8,500-₹18,500 for the same process — avoid them entirely. The Consulate General in Mumbai is the only Panama visa office in India, and it does not accept third-party submissions.

The Panama Canal is one of the greatest engineering achievements in human history. Watching massive cargo ships slide through the locks at Miraflores, just metres away, is a spectacle that photographs cannot capture. The visitor centre has a museum, IMAX theatre and four observation decks — plan at least half a day here.

Casco Viejo is the old quarter that time forgot. A UNESCO World Heritage site of crumbling colonial mansions being restored into boutique hotels, rooftop bars and art galleries. Bocas del Toro is the Caribbean side that most tourists never find. A cluster of islands off the north-west coast with turquoise water, coral reefs, sloths in the mangroves and a laid-back vibe that feels like Bali did twenty years ago. Surfing, snorkelling and island-hopping are the main activities, and the backpacker scene is vibrant.

San Blas Islands are unlike anywhere else on Earth. Run by the Guna Yaga indigenous people, these 365 islands have no hotels, no restaurants and no roads — just palm-fringed sandbars, crystal water and traditional huts. You sleep in a Guna community, eat fresh fish and disconnect from everything. It is one of the last truly untouched places in the Americas.

Boquete is the coffee capital of Panama, tucked in the highlands at1,200 metres with a spring-like climate year-round. Tour a coffee farm, hike to the summit of Volcan Baru (the only place in Central America where you can see both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans at once), or try white-water rafting on the Chiriqui Viejo river.

Indian citizens who want to visit Panama for tourism have two possible routes, depending on whether they hold a qualifying third-country visa. The visa-free route is available now and requires no application — you simply enter at Tocumen Airport with the right documents. The stamped tourist visa route has been suspended since November 2022.

The immigration officer at Tocumen Airport will check your passport, qualifying visa, return ticket and proof of funds. They assess whether you genuinely intend a temporary tourist visit and will leave Panama before your allowed stay expires.

Getting into Panama visa-free does not require obscure paperwork. Most of what you need is standard for any international trip:

·        Qualifying third-country visa — a valid US, UK, Schengen, Canadian, Australian, Japanese, South Korean or Singaporean visa. The visa must be active with remaining validity. Executive Decree 196 (October 2024) removed the old requirement that it must be multiple-entry, used at least once, or have 6 months validity — a valid visa now suffices.

·        Flight reservation — A confirmed onward or return booking showing you will leave Panama within your allowed stay. Airlines may deny boarding without this, and immigration officers check it at the border.

·        Hotel bookings — Confirmed reservations for your stay, or an invitation letter from your host in Panama. Budget hostels and Airbnb bookings work fine.

·        Bank statements — Recent statements showing a minimum of USD 500 (approximately ₹47,500) in available funds. A stable balance of ₹1-2 lakh is more comfortable and reduces any risk of questions at immigration.

·        Travel insurance — Strongly recommended though not mandatory. Medical treatment in Panama is expensive for foreigners, and evacuation from remote areas like San Blas or Bocas del Toro can be very costly without cover.

·        Employment proof — Salary slips for the last 3 months, ITR for the last 2 years, and an employer NOC on company letterhead with your approved leave dates. Self-employed applicants should carry business registration and GST filings.

Cover letter — A brief letter explaining why you are visiting Panama, your day-by-day itinerary, how the trip is funded, and why you will return to India. Mention specific places — the Panama Canal, Casco Viejo, Bocas del Toro — rather than generic statements. Officers respond better to concrete plans. If you are visiting family, include an invitation letter with your host's Panama residence details, address and contact number.

If you do not hold a qualifying third-country visa — You must first obtain a US, UK, Schengen or other qualifying visa before you can enter Panama visa-free. 2.      Book a confirmed return or onward flight — airlines may ask to see it at check-in before issuing your boarding pass.

3.      Prepare proof of economic solvency — a recent bank statement showing at least USD 500 (approximately ₹47,500) in available funds.

4.      Complete the immigration form — this is provided on arrival at Tocumen Airport or available online before your flight.

5.      Arrive at Tocumen International Airport (PTY) and proceed to immigration with your passport, qualifying visa printout and return ticket.

6.      The immigration officer will stamp your passport with a 30-day stay — keep this stamp safe as proof of your legal entry.

7.      Collect your luggage and clear customs — Panama has a straightforward process with nothing unusual for tourist arrivals.

Expert tip: The key to a smooth entry is having your qualifying visa, return ticket and proof of funds ready in your hand luggage — do not pack them in checked baggage. Immigration at Tocumen is efficient but thorough, and having documents easily accessible speeds up the process. If you do not hold a qualifying visa, your only option is to obtain one through the relevant embassy in India before booking any travel to Panama.

Panama is a year-round destination with a tropical climate, but the best time to visit depends on which part of the country you plan to explore. The dry season from mid-December to mid-April is the most popular, while the green season from May to November offers lower prices and fewer crowds.

Assuming you can get a visa on arrival. Indian citizens cannot get a visa on arrival in Panama under any circumstances. Claims of a "US$35 visa on arrival" are not supported by any official source. Airlines will deny boarding if you do not have a qualifying visa or pre-approved stamped visa.

Not knowing the stamped visa is suspended. The biggest mistake Indians make is applying at the Consulate General in Mumbai for a tourist visa that has been suspended since November 2022. Using third-party "eVisa" websites. Panama does not offer an eVisa for Indian citizens. The Consulate General explicitly states it "does not issue E-Visas through any webpage, travel agency, or any other location." Any website selling a "Panama eVisa" is unofficial — treat it as a scam and avoid it entirely.

Forgetting the economic solvency requirement. Immigration officers at Tocumen can ask to see proof of at least USD 500 in available funds. A bank statement showing ₹1-2 lakh is more comfortable and prevents any uncomfortable questions at the border. Do not rely on credit card limits alone.

Ignoring the return ticket rule. Airlines may deny boarding without a confirmed return or onward ticket, and immigration officers check it at the border. A one-way ticket to Panama without proof of onward travel is a red flag that can result in denial of entry.

Assuming the visa-free stay can be extended easily. The 30-day visa-free stay is granted at the officer's discretion and can be shortened. Overstaying results in fines and potential entry bans. If you need more than 30 days, plan your exit and re-entry carefully — but note that repeated short visits raise flags with immigration.

The Panama Canal is the main attraction and it delivers. Casco Viejo is the most photogenic neighbourhood in Central America. Crumbling colonial mansions being restored into boutique hotels and rooftop bars, cobblestone streets, a beautiful seafront promenade and the contrast of modern skyscrapers behind it. The food scene here is excellent, from fine dining to street food.

Bocas del Toro is the Caribbean escape you did not expect from Central America. Turquoise water, coral reefs, sloths in the mangroves and a backpacker vibe that feels like a more authentic version of what Bali used to be. Island-hopping by water taxi is the main activity, and the sunsets are extraordinary.

San Blas Islands are one of the last truly untouched places on Earth. No hotels, no restaurants, no roads — just palm-fringed sandbars, crystal water and Guna Yaga indigenous communities. You sleep in a traditional hut, eat fresh fish and disconnect from everything. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The Indian community in Panama is small but established. There are Indian restaurants in Panama City, a Hindu temple and a vibrant business community. Hindi is not widely spoken, but English is understood in tourist areas and most hotels.

Currency: Panama uses the Balboa (PAB), pegged 1:1 to the US Dollar. US dollars are accepted everywhere, and most transactions are in USD. Cards are widely accepted in cities, but carry cash for markets, small eateries and island destinations like Bocas del Toro and San Blas.

Connectivity: Get a local SIM or eSIM (Claro, Movistar) at Tocumen Airport or in Panama City — data plans are affordable and coverage is good in cities and tourist areas. Remote islands like San Blas have limited or no connectivity. Free WiFi is available in most hotels, cafes and restaurants.

Transport: Panama City has a modern Metro system (the first in Central America) plus buses and Uber. Taxis are plentiful but do not use meters — agree the fare before getting in. For intercity travel, domestic flights (Air Panama) connect Panama City to David and Bocas del Toro, and buses are comfortable and affordable.

Food: Try sancocho (chicken soup, Panama's national dish), ceviche, patacones (fried plantains), arroz con pollo andhojaldras (fried dough for breakfast). Seafood is excellent on both coasts. Indian restaurants exist in Panama City but are limited outside the capital. Tap water is safe to drink in Panama City.

Weather: Panama has a tropical climate with a dry season (mid-December to mid-April) and a green season (May to November). Panama City is hot and humid year-round (27-32°C). The highlands around Boquete are cooler (18-25°C). The Caribbean coast (Bocas del Toro) rains more frequently but is warm year-round.
