Peru Visa Guide for Indians: Visa, Fees & Exemption (2026)

This is the single most valuable piece of information for Indian travelers to Peru. Many Indians already hold qualifying visas and do not realize they can enter Peru without obtaining a separate Peruvian visa.

Who Qualifies for Visa-Free Entry?

Indian citizens holding a valid visa or permanent residence permit from any of these countries can enter Peru visa-free:

• United States of America (valid B1/B2 or other visa)
• Canada (valid visitor visa)
• United Kingdom (valid visitor visa)
• Australia (valid visitor visa)
• Schengen Area countries (valid Schengen visa — all 27 member states)

Conditions for Visa-Free Entry

The following conditions must ALL be met:

• The qualifying foreign visa must be valid for at least six months from the date of arrival in Peru
• The visa must be a multiple-entry visa (single-entry visas may not qualify)
• The visa should ideally have been used at least once to enter the issuing country before using it to enter Peru (the Embassy of Peru in London states this condition, though the New Delhi page does not explicitly mention it — carry evidence of prior use to be safe)
• Maximum stay: 180 days within any 365-day period (single or multiple visits)
• The stay is determined by immigration officers at the port of entry

What You Need at Immigration

Even under visa-free entry, carry these documents:

• Valid Indian passport with at least six months validity
• Proof of onward or return travel
• Proof of sufficient funds for the stay
• Hotel reservations or accommodation proof
• A printed copy of the embassy's visa exemption guidelines (recommended — airlines sometimes deny boarding due to confusion about this rule)

Real-World Warning: Airline Boarding Denials

In June 2024, an Indian family was denied boarding at Bengaluru airport on a KLM flight to Peru despite holding valid US, Australian, and Schengen visas. The case went to court. Airlines operate under carrier liability rules and may interpret visa exemption conditions more strictly than the embassy. The Embassy of Peru in New Delhi has confirmed the exemption exists, but advised travelers to carry printed embassy guidelines and confirm requirements with their airline before flying.

The Embassy of Peru in New Delhi issues several visa categories based on the purpose of travel.

Tourist Visa (Visa de Turista)

Purpose: Recreation, sightseeing, visiting friends or family, short-term cultural programs, or brief medical treatment.

Ideal for: Leisure travelers exploring Machu Picchu, Cusco, Lima, and other destinations; adventure tourism (trekking, Amazon tours); cultural experiences.

Note: This visa does not permit immigration, permanent residence, or paid work activities.

Business Visa (Visa de Negocios)

Purpose: Business meetings, conferences, trade fairs, contract negotiations, or exploring business opportunities.

Additional documents required:

• Apostilled invitation letter from a business associate in Peru, written in English or Spanish, sent directly to consular@embassyperuindia.in
• Formal letter from the applicant's employer stating company profile and purpose of travel
• Letter from a recognized Indian chamber of commerce (FIEO, FICCI, APEDA, ASSOCHAM, PHD, etc.) confirming company registration
• Proof of company registration of the applicant's employer

Transit Visa (Effective 1 February 2025)

Purpose: Transiting through Peruvian airports or territory en route to a third country.

Who needs it: Indian citizens without a qualifying US/UK/Canada/Australia/Schengen visa who have a layover in Peru, even if not leaving the airport.

Who is exempt: Indians holding valid US/UK/Canada/Australia/Schengen visas or permanent residence (Supreme Decree No. 004-2025-RE).

Documents required:

• Valid passport with at least six months validity
• Copy of passport biographical data page
• Completed form DGC-005
• One passport-size photo (white background, no glasses)
• Consular fee
• Confirmed onward flight tickets to final destination
• Visa for final destination country (if required)
• Proof of financial means

Student Visa (Visa de Estudiante)

Purpose: Pursuing education or academic programs at recognized Peruvian institutions.

Key requirement: Admission letter from a recognized Peruvian educational institution. Contact the Embassy of Peru in New Delhi for specific requirements, as student visas require additional authorization from the Peruvian Migratory Authority.

Work Visa (Visa de Trabajo)

Purpose: Employment with a Peruvian company or organization.

Important: The Embassy of Peru does not endorse any third-party agencies. The embassy does not charge any additional fees beyond the official visa cost. Agency fees are separate and optional.

Cost: Visa vs. Visa-Free Entry

If you already hold a qualifying US/UK/Canada/Australia/Schengen visa, you pay zero additional cost for Peru entry. If you need to apply for a Peru visa, budget approximately INR 3,000-6,000 including the visa fee, travel, and document preparation.

Core Documents (All Visa Types)

1. Passport: Original passport valid for at least six months from the date of entry into Peru, with a minimum of two blank pages
2. Passport Copy: Photocopy of the passport's biographical data page
3. Visa Application Form: Completed form DGC-005 (download from the Embassy of Peru website), typed or handwritten in block letters, signed in designated spaces

• Guarantee letter from the sponsor (in Peru or India) stating they will bear some or all costs of boarding, lodging, or repatriation if needed
• Valid identification document of the sponsor (Peruvian DNI, Aadhaar card, passport, or other national ID)

Additional Documents for Nationals of Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka

• Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) is mandatory, issued within the last six months

Documents the Consular Officer May Request

The Embassy of Peru reserves the right to request additional documents at any time. Common additional requests include:

• Round-trip ticket showing entry into and departure from Peru, with final destination in a third country
• Proof of admissibility to the final destination and any intermediate stops
• Proof of sufficient financial means to cover travel expenses
• Any additional documents deemed relevant by the Consular Officer

Step 1: Confirm You Need a Visa

Check if you qualify for visa-free entry (see Visa-Free Entry section above). If you hold a valid US/UK/Canada/Australia/Schengen visa with at least six months validity, you may not need to apply.

Step 2: Download and Complete the Application Form

Visit the official Embassy of Peru website and download form DGC-005. Fill it out completely in block letters. Ensure your name matches exactly as it appears in your passport. Print the completed form.

Step 3: Gather All Documents

Collect all required documents as per the checklist above. Arrange originals plus one set of photocopies. Verify everything against the official requirements before visiting the embassy.

Step 4: Visit the Embassy in Person

The Embassy of Peru accepts document submissions at its premises between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM, Monday to Friday (except on Government Holidays as announced by the Department of Personnel and Training). Applicants must submit documents in person, except in the case of minors (exemptions evaluated on a per-case basis).

Step 5: Receive Email Acknowledgment

After submitting your complete file, the embassy will acknowledge receipt by email. This email will contain a link to schedule your personal interview. Standalone documents sent by email or courier do NOT initiate visa processing. Only a complete file submitted to the embassy and acknowledged by email is considered for processing.

Step 6: Attend the Personal Interview

The interview is mandatory. The consular officer will ask about your travel plans, financial means, employment, and ties to India. Be honest and consistent. Bring all original documents.

Step 7: Wait for Processing

Processing takes 7-10 working days for Indian nationals, counted from the day after your interview. Step 8: Collect Your Visa

You will be notified when your visa is ready. Collect your passport in person. Verify all visa details (dates, name spelling, visa type, entry type) immediately. The visa will be affixed as a sticker in your passport.

Embassy of Peru in New Delhi (Only Processing Center)

Important: The Embassy of Peru in New Delhi is the ONLY authorized center for processing Peru visa applications for Indian citizens. Applications cannot be submitted through third-party agencies, online portals, or through consulates in other Indian cities. All applicants must submit in person at the New Delhi embassy.

Factors That Affect Processing Time

Faster processing:

• Complete and accurate documentation
• Clear travel history
• Strong financial profile
• Applying during off-peak season (April-June, September-November)

Slower processing:

• Incomplete documents requiring additional requests
• Peak travel season (December-February, July-August)
• Previous visa rejections or immigration issues
• Applications from non-Indian nationals

When to Apply

Apply at least 15 calendar days before your trip (official embassy recommendation). For best results, apply 4-6 weeks in advance during peak season.

Financial Documentation (Most Critical Factor)

The embassy requires bank statements for the last three months. There is no officially published minimum balance requirement, but your statements should show:

• Regular income and transactions (avoid sudden large deposits before application)
• A healthy closing balance that demonstrates ability to fund the trip
• Consistent transaction patterns over the three-month period

• Sponsor guarantee letter (required for all sponsored trips — not just for financial proof)

• Bank statements showing sudden large deposits just before application — the embassy looks for consistent financial activity over three months, not a lump sum
• Mismatch between stated purpose of visit and actual itinerary — if your cover letter says "tourism" but your itinerary includes business meetings, this raises red flags
• Incomplete sponsor documentation — the guarantee letter must clearly state the sponsor's financial responsibility, not just their relationship to the applicant

Processing Trends:

• The New Delhi embassy is the sole processing center, so all applications nationwide converge on one office — plan accordingly during peak seasons
• Processing time of 7-10 working days is generally reliable for Indian applicants, but additional document requests can add 1-2 weeks
• Non-Indian nationals (those with Indian residency but foreign passports) face an additional 10 working days of processing

Seasonal Demand Patterns:

• Peak application periods: December-February (winter travel to Peru) and June-August (Indian summer holidays)
• Off-peak periods: April-June and September-November offer faster processing
• Apply 4-6 weeks ahead during peak periods

Upon arrival in Peru, all travelers must complete the Tarjeta Andina de Migración (TAM). This is now available through the TAM Virtual process. The TAM card records your entry and stay details. Immigration officers at the port of entry determine your permitted stay duration (up to 183 days for tourist visas, or up to 180 days for visa-free entries).

• TAM Card: Complete the Tarjeta Andina de Migración upon arrival (available through TAM Virtual process)
• Maximum Stay: Your permitted stay is determined by the immigration officer at the port of entry and stamped in your passport — do not exceed it
• Currency: Peru uses the Peruvian Sol (PEN). US Dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas. Carry both currencies as backup
