Colombia Tourist Visa Guide for Indians 2026

Before you start your Colombia visa application, make sure you have these essentials ready:

• Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned entry date with at least 2 blank pages
• Two recent passport-size photos (3cm x 4cm, white background, taken within the last 6 months)

The key thing to remember about Colombia is that the Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate is mandatory for every Indian traveller, regardless of which region of Colombia you plan to visit. It is the single most commonly overlooked document and the number one reason Indian applications face delays. Get vaccinated at an authorised government hospital in India and carry the original certificate.

Important: The tourist visa fee is USD 89 (approximately ₹7,500) — made up of a USD 50 study fee (non-refundable, paid when you apply) plus a USD 39 issuance fee (paid only if your visa is approved). The study fee is non-refundable even if your visa is refused, so complete your application carefully the first time. Travel health insurance is now mandatory for all visa categories since January 2026.

Medellín, the city of eternal spring. Once the most dangerous city in the world, Medellín has transformed into one of the most innovative cities in South America. The Metrocable lifts you over lush green valleys, the botanical garden is spectacular, and the Plaza Botero displays 23 oversized sculptures by Colombia's most famous artist. The weather is a perfect 22 degrees Celsius year-round.

Cartagena, the Caribbean jewel. A UNESCO World Heritage walled city on Colombia's Caribbean coast — 13 kilometres of colonial stone walls, colourful buildings, horse-drawn carriages and Caribbean restaurants. The old town is one of the best-preserved colonial cities in the Americas, and the nearby Rosario Islands offer white-sand beaches.

Coffee culture and extraordinary value. Colombia is one of the world's top three coffee producers, and the Coffee Cultural Landscape — a UNESCO site — offers plantation tours, cloud forests and stunning mountain scenery. Add incredibly affordable food, accommodation and transport, and Colombia delivers one of the best value-for-money trips any Indian traveller can take in South America.

Indian citizens who want to visit Colombia for tourism, holidays, or to visit family and friends apply for a Visitor Visa Type V (TP-11) through the Cancillería de Colombia online portal. The visa allows stays of up to 90 days, extendable once for another 90 days inside Colombia.

There is an important exception. If you hold a valid US visa (any category except C1 transit) or a valid Schengen visa (Type C or D) with more than 180 days of remaining validity at the time of entry, you can enter Colombia visa-free for up to 90 days without applying for a Colombian visa. This exemption is confirmed by the Embassy of India in Bogotá.

Colombia does not offer visa on arrival for Indian citizens under any circumstances. Every Indian traveller who does not qualify for the US/Schengen exemption must obtain a visa before departure. Airlines at Indian airports will deny boarding without a valid visa.

• Travel insurance — Mandatory since January 2026 for all visa categories, covering medical expenses for the full duration of your stay.
• Employment proof — Salary slips for the last 3 months, ITR for the last 2 years, and an employer NOC on company letterhead with your approved leave dates.

Cover letter — A brief, honest letter explaining why you are visiting Colombia, your day-by-day itinerary, how the trip is funded, and why you will return to India. Name specific places like Bogotá's Gold Museum, Medellín's Comuna 13 or Cartagena's Walled City. All of it can be written in English; no Spanish translation is needed.

Apostille requirement — Colombia requires Indian documents to be apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). This is a specific stamp, not just a notarisation. Budget 3-7 working days for MEA processing. Apostille centres operate in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Kolkata. Many Indian applicants skip this step or get regular notarisation instead, which leads to refusal.

The Colombia visa application is fully electronic through the Cancillería de Colombia portal — no embassy visit is required for most applicants. Here is the compressed step-by-step:

1. Create an account on the Cancillería portal at cancilleria.gov.co and select the Visitor Visa Type V (TP-11) tourist category.
2. Fill in the online application form with your personal details, travel information and passport data — ensure everything matches your passport exactly.
3. Upload your documents — passport scan, photograph (3cm x 4cm), flight reservation, hotel bookings, bank statements, employment proof, travel insurance and Yellow Fever certificate.
4. Pay the study fee of USD 50 (approximately ₹4,250) by credit or debit card — this fee is non-refundable even if your visa is refused.
5. Wait for processing — 5-15 working days for standard applications; check your email regularly for updates or requests for additional documents.
6. If approved, pay the issuance fee of USD 39 (approximately ₹3,315) within 10 business days — failure to pay will terminate your application.
7. Download and print your e-Visa PDF — you will receive it by email after issuance fee payment. Carry the printout when you travel.

Expert tip: The Check-Mig form is mandatory for all travellers entering Colombia by air — complete it free at apps.migracioncolombia.gov.co within 72 hours to 1 hour before your flight. Do not use third-party sites that charge for this free form. Airlines will deny boarding without a completed Check-Mig.

The best time to visit Colombia depends on which regions you plan to explore — Colombia sits on the equator, so temperatures are determined by altitude rather than season.

Missing the Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate. This is the single most common oversight for Indian applicants. Colombia requires the certificate for all Indian travellers regardless of which region you plan to visit. Get vaccinated at an authorised government hospital in India at least 10 days before travel and carry the original certificate.

Assuming visa-free entry without a qualifying US or Schengen visa. Many Indian travellers mistakenly believe Colombia is visa-free for Indians. It is not — unless you hold a valid US visa (except C1 transit) or valid Schengen visa (C/D type) with more than 180 days of remaining validity. Check your passport carefully before you travel.

Getting regular notarisation instead of MEA apostille. Colombia requires Indian documents to be apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs, which is a specific stamp process — not just notarisation. Weak bank balance with sudden deposits. Dropping ₹3 lakh into your account a week before applying looks like borrowed money. What convinces the officer is a consistent balance of ₹1.5-2.5 lakh over 3-6 months with regular salary credits that match your declared income.

Paying for the Check-Mig on third-party websites. The Check-Mig form is completely free and mandatory — always use the official government portal at apps.migracioncolombia.gov.co. Third-party sites charge USD 60-140 for the same free form.

Booking flights before visa approval. Never confirm and pay for non-refundable tickets before the visa is granted. Use a hold or dummy reservation for the application, and only buy real tickets after approval. If the visa is delayed or refused, the ticket money is gone.

Bogotá's Gold Museum and La Candelaria. The Museo del Oro houses over 55,000 pieces of pre-Hispanic gold — the largest collection of its kind in the world. Outside, the cobblestone streets of La Candelaria are covered in street art, colonial churches and atmospheric cafés, all within walking distance of the main plaza.

Medellín's transformation and eternal spring. The city's Metrocable cable cars carry you over colourful hillside barrios with stunning valley views. Plaza Botero displays 23 monumental sculptures by Fernando Botero in the open air. The weather stays a perfect 22 degrees Celsius all year, and the nightlife and restaurant scene rivals any South American capital.

Cartagena's walled old town and Caribbean beaches. A UNESCO World Heritage Site of 13 kilometres of colonial stone walls, pastel-coloured buildings, flower-balconied balconies and horse-drawn carriages. At sunset, the Café del Mar on the city walls is one of the most romantic spots in Latin America. The Rosario Islands are a 45-minute boat ride away.

Coffee culture in the Eje Cafetero. The Coffee Cultural Landscape — a UNESCO site — offers plantation tours where you pick, process and brew your own Colombian coffee. Salento and the Valle de Cocora, with its 60-metre wax palms (Colombia's national tree), look like something from a storybook.

Incredible value for money. Colombia is one of the most affordable destinations in South America. A full meal at a local restaurant costs INR 400-800, a budget hotel room INR 1,500-3,000, and a domestic flight INR 2,000-5,000. For Indian travellers accustomed to European prices, Colombia stretches the budget remarkably far.

Currency: Colombia uses the Colombian Peso (COP). 1 INR is approximately 32 COP (August 2026). Cards are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants and shops, but carry cash for markets, street food and smaller towns. ATMs are plentiful in cities — use Banco de Bogotá or Bancolombia for the best rates.

Connectivity: Get a local SIM card (Claro, Movistar or Tigo) at the airport or in any city — data plans are affordable and coverage is excellent in urban areas. Free WiFi is available across hotels, cafés and shopping centres. Coverage in remote areas like the Amazon or Pacific coast is limited.

Transport: Domestic flights connect Bogotá, Medellín and Cartagena — Avianca, LATAM and Viva Air operate frequent services. The TransMilenio BRT system in Bogotá is efficient but crowded. Food: Colombian food is hearty and affordable — try bandeja paisa (a massive platter of beans, rice, chicharrón, plantain, avocado, egg and ground beef), arepas (corn cakes), sancocho (chicken soup) and ajiaco (potato and chicken soup unique to Bogotá). The fruit juices are extraordinary — try lulo, maracuyá and guanábana. Tap water is safe in Bogotá and Medellín.

Weather: Bogotá is cool at 2,640 metres (10-18 degrees Celsius — bring a jacket), Medellín is warm year-round at 1,500 metres (22-28 degrees), and Cartagena is hot and humid on the coast (25-32 degrees). Pack layers for Bogotá and light, breathable clothing for Cartagena. Rain is possible in any season — carry a compact umbrella.
