Liechtenstein Tourist Visa Guide for Indians 2026

Before you start your Liechtenstein visa application, make sure you have these essentials ready:

·         Passport valid for 3+ months beyond your return date with 2 blank pages

The key thing to remember about Liechtenstein is that it does not issue its own visas. Switzerland represents Liechtenstein for all visa matters, so you apply for a Schengen visa through VFS Global's Swiss division. The visa sticker will show "CHE" (Switzerland) but is fully valid for entry to Liechtenstein. There are no border controls between Switzerland and Liechtenstein — you simply cross by bus or car.

 Important: Since August 2025, the Swiss Embassy accepts only strictly necessary documents. Do not submit additional paperwork beyond what is required — extra documents may delay processing.

Alpine hiking without the crowds. The 75-kilometre Liechtenstein Trail connects all eleven municipalities through vineyards, forests, and mountain ridges. The Vaduz segment alone offers half-day hikes along the Rhine embankment and through terraced vineyards with panoramic valley views. In summer, wildflower meadows line the trails; in autumn, golden foliage and grape-harvest activity transform the landscape.

Wine from the Prince's own cellar. Liechtenstein is one of the smallest wine-producing nations on Earth, and nearly all of its vineyards cling to the sun-drenched slopes above Vaduz. The Prince himself owns the Hofkellerei winery, whose Pinot Noir and Chardonnay rarely leave the country. A tasting here is a genuinely exclusive experience.

The world's most exclusive passport stamp. For a small fee at the Vaduz tourist office, you can get your passport stamped with a Liechtenstein souvenir stamp. Indian citizens who want to visit Liechtenstein for tourism apply for a Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) through Switzerland:

The standard tourist visa allows stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across all 27 Schengen countries. You apply through VFS Global's Swiss Schengen division, which processes applications on behalf of the Swiss Embassy in New Delhi.

If you plan to visit multiple Schengen countries, apply to the country where you will spend the most nights. If Liechtenstein is your main destination, you apply through Switzerland (since Liechtenstein has no embassy). Getting your Liechtenstein Schengen visa does not require obscure paperwork. Most of what you need is standard for any European trip.

·         Passport — Valid for at least 3 months beyond your return date, with at least 2 blank pages. Your passport should also not be older than 10 years.

·         Passport photos — Two recent colour photos, 35mm x 45mm, white background, full face visible. Matte finish preferred by the Swiss Embassy.

·         Flight itinerary — A confirmed round-trip booking to Zurich Airport (ZRH), since Liechtenstein has no airport. From Zurich, you travel by train to Sargans (1 hour) then bus to Vaduz (20 minutes). Book refundable tickets or use a dummy ticket for the application.

·         Hotel bookings — Confirmed reservations for every night of your stay in Liechtenstein. Refundable bookings are perfectly acceptable. If you plan to stay in nearby Swiss or Austrian towns and day-trip to Liechtenstein, book those hotels too.

·         Bank statements — Last 3-6 months of statements, original and stamped by your bank. The Swiss Embassy recommends approximately €60-100 per day of stay. For a 7-day trip, maintain a closing balance of ₹3-5 lakh.

·         Employment proof — A letter from your employer on company letterhead confirming your position, salary, and approved leave dates. Self-employed applicants should provide business registration documents and ITR for the last 2-3 years.

·         Cover letter — A brief letter explaining why you want to visit Liechtenstein, your planned itinerary, and how you will fund the trip. Mention that you are applying through the Swiss Embassy since Liechtenstein has no diplomatic mission in India.

·         Travel insurance — Mandatory for all Schengen visa applications. Must cover minimum €30,000 for medical emergencies, valid across all 27 Schengen states, for your entire trip duration. A basic policy costs ₹500-1,500.

1.      Download the Schengen visa application form from the VFS Global portal (Swiss Schengen division) and fill it in English or German — print on white A4 paper.

2.      Gather your documents using the checklist above. The Swiss Embassy accepts only strictly necessary documents — do not submit extras.

3.      Book an appointment at your nearest VFS Global centre (Swiss Schengen division). Centres in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru handle Liechtenstein applications.

4.      Visit the VFS centre with all original documents plus photocopies. Submit your biometrics (fingerprints and photo) at the centre.

5.      Pay the fees — visa fee plus VFS service charge. Collect your acknowledgement receipt with the reference number for tracking.

6.      Track your application online via the VFS Global portal. Standard processing is 15-20 working days, but can extend to 30-45 days during peak season (April-September).

7.      Collect your passport from the VFS centre or opt for courier delivery.

 Tip: Apply at least 4-6 weeks before your travel date. Liechtenstein applications go through the Swiss Embassy, which handles a high volume of Schengen visas. Peak season delays are common.

Liechtenstein is a year-round destination, but summer offers the best hiking and the famous National Day celebrations on 15 August, when the Prince opens his castle gardens to the public. Winter is ideal for skiing at Malbun and cosy Christmas markets. Spring and autumn offer shoulder-season prices and stunning landscapes.

1. Applying to the wrong embassy. Liechtenstein does not have its own embassy in India. You must apply through the Swiss Embassy or VFS Global's Swiss Schengen division. Applying to the German or Austrian embassy will result in rejection.

2. Not enough processing time. The Swiss Embassy handles a high volume of Schengen visas. Processing takes 15-20 working days in normal conditions and up to 30-45 days in peak season. Apply at least 4-6 weeks early.

3. Weak financial proof. Liechtenstein is expensive — comparable to Switzerland. The Swiss Embassy recommends €60-100 per day. Maintaining ₹3-5 lakh in your account for 3-6 months demonstrates you can fund the trip.

4. Submitting unnecessary documents. Since August 2025, the Swiss Embassy accepts only strictly necessary documents. Extra paperwork can delay processing rather than strengthen your application.

5. Ignoring the "CHE" visa label. Your visa sticker will show "CHE" (Switzerland), not Liechtenstein. This is normal — it is a valid Schengen visa that allows entry to Liechtenstein. Do not be confused by this.

6. Last-minute application. Applying just days before travel leaves no buffer for delays. The Swiss Embassy's processing times are longer than many other Schengen countries due to volume.

 Expert Tip: If you have previously travelled to Schengen countries, the US, or the UK, mention this in your cover letter. Strong travel history significantly improves your chances of approval and may qualify you for a multiple-entry visa.

The hiking is extraordinary. The Liechtenstein Trail and the Prince's Way offer trails through vineyards, forests, and mountain ridges with panoramic views of the Rhine Valley and Swiss Alps. The trails are well-marked, uncrowded, and free.

Liechtenstein uses the Swiss Franc (CHF) and prices are comparable to Switzerland. Budget travellers can save by staying in nearby Feldkirch (Austria) or Buchs (Switzerland) and day-tripping to Liechtenstein.

No direct flights operate between India and Liechtenstein (the country has no airport). Fly to Zurich Airport (ZRH), then take a train to Sargans (1 hour) and a LIEmobil bus to Vaduz (20 minutes). Total travel time from Zurich to Vaduz is approximately 1.5-2 hours. Alternatively, fly to Vienna and travel by train via Feldkirch.
