Belarus Tourist Visa Guide for Indians 2026

Before you travel to Belarus, make sure you have these essentials ready:

• Passport valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry with 2 blank pages
• Valid multi-entry EU or Schengen visa with at least one entry stamp (if using visa-free route)
• Confirmed round-trip flight ticket departing from one of the 6 Belarus airports (if using visa-free route)
• Medical insurance with minimum EUR 10,000 coverage valid for Belarus territory
• Proof of financial means — at least EUR 25 per day of stay (approximately INR 2,300 per day)
• Hotel booking confirmation or invitation letter from your host in Belarus
• One passport-size photo (35mm x 45mm, white background) for e-Visa or embassy visa
• Completed visa application form (for e-Visa or embassy visa)
• Bank statements for the last 3-6 showing consistent income and sufficient balance

The key thing to understand about Belarus is that Indian citizens have three completely different entry paths. If you already hold a used multi-entry Schengen visa, you can enter visa-free for up to 30 days through six Belarus airports — no application, no fee, no embassy visit. If you do not hold a Schengen visa, the e-Visa (launched March 2025) is the easiest option — apply online from home, EUR 66 fee, 7-day processing. The embassy visa is the fallback for stays beyond 30 days or work/student purposes.

Important: The visa-free route has a critical routing rule — you must NOT arrive from or depart to Russia. Most Indian flights to Minsk transit through Moscow, which invalidates the visa-free option. Route through a European city (Warsaw, Vilnius, Riga) instead to qualify. The visa-free regime is temporary — valid until 31 December 2026 and may be extended.

Belarus is called the "Lungs of Europe" for its vast forests and pristine nature. Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is home to the European bison — the continent's heaviest wild animal — and the original inspiration for the Winnie the Pooh stories. Walking through ancient oak forests with bison grazing nearby is an experience unlike anywhere else in Europe.

Minsk is one of the most underrated capitals in Europe. Wide Soviet-era avenues, immaculate parks, the stunning Trinity Suburb old town and the futuristic National Library building — the city is clean, safe and surprisingly beautiful. The food scene is hearty and affordable, with portions that will make you very happy.

Brest Fortress is a WWII hero fortress that resisted the German invasion for 30 days in 1941, long after the rest of the region had fallen. The memorial complex is one of the most powerful war memorials in the world — the crumbling walls, the eternal flame and the stories of the defenders are deeply moving.

Mir Castle and Nesvizh Castle are UNESCO World Heritage sites that rival anything in Western Europe. The red-brick Mir Castle, built in the 16th century, is one of the most photogenic castles in Eastern Europe. Nesvizh, with its palatial residence and beautiful park, was the seat of the powerful Radziwill family.

Belarus is one of the most affordable countries in Europe. A full day of activities, meals and accommodation costs a fraction of what you would spend in Western Europe. Your Indian Rupee goes a very long way here, and the quality of experiences — castles, forests, historic cities — punches well above the price.

Indian citizens who want to visit Belarus for tourism have three possible routes, depending on whether they hold a qualifying Schengen visa and how they plan to enter the country. The visa-free route requires a used multi-entry Schengen visa and entry through one of six Belarus airports. The e-Visa route is available to all Indian citizens online. The embassy route requires an in-person visit to the Embassy in New Delhi.

The immigration officer at the border will check your passport, qualifying documents, return ticket and proof of funds. They assess whether you genuinely intend a temporary tourist visit and will leave Belarus before your allowed stay expires.

Getting into Belarus visa-free does not require obscure paperwork. Most of what you need is standard for any international trip:

• Passport — valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry, with at least 2 blank pages. The same rule applies to any older passports you hold.
• Schengen visa — a valid multi-entry EU or Schengen visa (C-type or D-type) that has been used at least once (entry stamp required). A brand-new unused Schengen visa does not qualify for visa-free entry.
• Flight ticket — A confirmed booking showing departure from one of the 6 Belarus airports (Minsk, Brest, Gomel, Grodno, Mogilev, Vitebsk). A one-way ticket to Belarus without onward travel from these airports is a red flag.
• Hotel booking — Confirmed reservations for your stay, or an invitation letter from your host in Belarus. Hotels handle registration automatically for stays over 5 days.
• Bank statements — Recent statements showing a minimum of EUR 25 per day of stay (approximately INR 2,300 per day). A stable balance of INR 1-2 lakh is comfortable.
• Travel insurance — Mandatory for visa-free entry, with EUR 10,000 minimum coverage valid for Belarus territory. You can buy it at Minsk Airport on arrival if you forget.
• Employment proof — Salary slips for the last 3 months, ITR for the last 2 years, and an employer NOC on company letterhead with your approved leave dates.

Cover letter — A brief, honest letter explaining why you are visiting Belarus, your day-by-day itinerary, how the trip is funded and why you will return to India. Mention specific places — Minsk, Brest Fortress, Belovezhskaya Pushcha, Mir Castle — rather than generic statements. Officers respond better to concrete plans. If you are visiting family, include an invitation letter with your host's Belarus residence details, address and contact number.

If you do not hold a qualifying Schengen visa — The e-Visa route is your best option. Apply online at e-pasluga.by — no embassy visit required. The fee is EUR 66 (EUR 60 consular + EUR 6 service), processing takes 7 calendar days, and the visa is valid for single entry up to 30 days. The e-Visa works for all entry points including airports, land borders and rail crossings, unlike the visa-free route which is limited to airports.

If you already hold a used multi-entry Schengen visa, there is no application to complete — you simply enter Belarus at one of the six participating airports. Here is what to expect:

1. Ensure your Schengen visa is valid and has at least one entry stamp, and your passport has at least 6 months validity from your entry date.
2. Book a confirmed departure flight from one of the 6 Belarus airports — airlines may ask to see it at check-in before issuing your boarding pass.
3. Prepare proof of financial means — at least EUR 25 per day of stay (approximately INR 2,300 per day).
4. Purchase medical insurance with EUR 10,000 minimum coverage valid for Belarus — you can buy this at Minsk Airport on arrival if needed.
5. Arrive at Minsk National Airport (MSQ) or one of the other 5 participating airports and proceed to immigration with your passport, Schengen visa printout and return ticket.
6. The immigration officer will stamp your passport with a 30-day stay — keep this stamp safe as proof of your legal entry.
7. If staying more than 5 days, register with local authorities — hotels handle this automatically, but private accommodation requires registration at the local OVIR office within 5 days.

Expert tip: The visa-free route is the most efficient path, but the routing rule is critical. If your flight transits through Moscow, the visa-free option is invalidated regardless of your Schengen status. Route through Warsaw, Vilnius or Riga instead. The e-Visa (launched March 2025) is the best fallback — apply from home, no embassy visit, and it works for all entry points including land borders.

Belarus has a continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. The best time to visit is from May to September when the weather is pleasant and outdoor activities are at their best. Winter (December-February) is cold but beautiful, with Christmas markets in Minsk.

Booking flights via Moscow without knowing the rule. The biggest mistake Indians make is transiting through Moscow to reach Minsk. This completely invalidates the visa-free option, even if you hold a valid Schengen visa with entry stamps. Route through European cities (Warsaw, Vilnius, Riga) instead.

Not having an entry stamp in the Schengen visa. The Schengen visa must have been used at least once before entering Belarus — the entry stamp is what qualifies you for visa-free entry. A brand-new unused Schengen visa does not work. Travel to any Schengen country first to get the stamp.

Forgetting the 5-day registration rule. If you stay more than 5 days in Belarus, you must register with local authorities. Hotels handle this automatically, but if you stay in private accommodation or with friends, you must register at the local OVIR office within 5 days. Failure to register can result in fines.

Using the wrong e-Visa website. The only official e-Visa portal is e-pasluga.by. Third-party websites charge inflated fees for the same service. Always apply through the official government portal.

Ignoring the EUR 10,000 insurance requirement. Medical insurance with EUR 10,000 minimum coverage is mandatory for visa-free entry. You can buy it at Minsk Airport on arrival, but having it ready avoids any complications at immigration. Keep the policy printed and accessible.

Assuming the visa-free regime is permanent. The visa-free entry facility is temporary — currently valid until 31 December 2026. It may be extended, but there is no guarantee. Check the latest official announcements before relying on it.

Belovezhskaya Pushcha is one of the last and largest parts of the immense primeval forest that once stretched across the European Plain. The European bison — the heaviest wild animal in Europe — roam free in the ancient oak forest. Walking through the reserve with bison grazing nearby is a wildlife experience that rivals anything in Africa, and it is just a few hours from Minsk.

Minsk is a city of wide avenues, Soviet grandeur and surprisingly beautiful corners. The Trinity Suburb old town, with its pastel-coloured buildings along the Svislach River, looks like a painting. The National Library building, shaped like a giant diamond, is one of the most unusual architectural landmarks in Europe. And the food — draniki (potato pancakes), machanka (pork stew) and kolduny (stuffed dumplings) — is hearty, delicious and incredibly affordable.

Brest Fortress is one of the most powerful war memorials in the world. The4th Fortress held out against the German invasion for 30 days in June 1941, long after the surrounding area had fallen. The crumbling walls, the eternal flame and the "Courage" monument tell a story of extraordinary bravery. It is a place that stays with you long after you leave.

Mir Castle is one of the most photogenic castles in Eastern Europe. The red-brick fortress, built in the 16th century, sits in a small town that feels frozen in time. Combined with nearby Nesvizh Castle and its palatial residence, a day trip from Minsk covers two UNESCO World Heritage sites — something few European capitals can offer.

The cost of travel is remarkably low. Belarus is one of the cheapest countries in Europe. A full day of activities, meals and accommodation can cost less than what you would spend on a single meal in London or Paris. Your Indian Rupee goes a very long way here.

Currency: Belarus uses the Belarusian Ruble (BYN). 1 EUR is approximately 3.7 BYN, and 1 INR is approximately 0.34 BYN. Euros are accepted in some tourist areas but at poor rates — always pay in BYN. Cards are widely accepted in cities, but carry BYN cash for rural areas and small towns.

Connectivity: Get a local SIM or eSIM (MTS, A1, life:) at the airport or in town — data plans are affordable and coverage is good in cities and tourist areas. Free WiFi is available in most hotels, cafes and restaurants in Minsk. English is not widely spoken outside Minsk — carry a translation app.

Transport: Minsk has an efficient Metro system (two lines) plus buses and trams. For intercity travel, trains (belarusianrailways.by) connect Minsk to Brest, Grodno and other cities comfortably and affordably. Buses are also available. Taxis are cheap — use apps like Yandex Taxi to avoid overcharging.

Food: Try draniki (potato pancakes, the national dish), machanka (pork stew with pancakes), kolduny (stuffed dumplings), borscht (beetroot soup) and syrniki (cottage cheese pancakes). The food is hearty, filling and remarkably cheap. Vegetarian options are limited outside Minsk. Indian restaurants exist in Minsk but are limited.

Weather: Belarus has a continental climate with warm summers (18-28C) and cold winters (-5 to -15C). Spring (March-May) is cool and variable. Autumn (September-November) is pleasant with beautiful foliage. Pack warm layers for winter and light rain gear for spring/autumn.

All trip costs include return flights from India (INR 30,000-70,000), visa (free with Schengen or EUR 66 e-Visa), accommodation, food, transport and activities.

There are no direct flights between India and Belarus. Most routes transit through Moscow (Aeroflot, Belavia) or European cities (LOT via Warsaw, airBaltic via Riga, Wizz Air via Vilnius).
